Know Before You Go – Exuma Terminology

One of the joys of traveling is the experience and discovery of different cultures, languages, and foods. But it’s never a bad idea to do a little homework in advance so you can talk like a local wherever you are visiting. So here’s a cheat sheet with some common words that you’ll want to master for your Exuma vacation:

Restaurants

Palapa At Grand Isle

The Palapa offers poolside views of the ocean and wonderful atmosphere for those seeking a relaxing lunch or dinner. Offered is a menu of soups, salads and sandwiches as well as wonderful entrees of fresh fish, steaks and pasta. The Palapa is located in Grand Isle Resort near Rokers Point and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6:30am to 10:00pm.

St. Francis Resort

Situated on a hill on Stocking Island, St. Francis is a wonderful place to enjoy views of the harbor while enjoying lunch or dinner on their outdoor deck. Burgers, wraps, salads and sandwiches are the lunchtime fare. Dinner reservations need to be made by 4:00pm. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 9:00pm.

Eddies Edgewater

Eddies is a longtime local favorite and very popular with boaters. Every Monday night will find a festive gathering and live Rake n Scrape music. Every Friday afternoon is BBQ Jerk and all week is great chicken and other native dishes. Located in Georgetown on the back side of Victoria Pond.

Big Ds

Located just west of Sandals on one of the nicest beaches on the Island Big Ds is a laid back restaurant and beach bar offering great conch salad, fish, burgers and more. They are open for lunch and dinner with both indoor and outdoor seating. Located in Steventon. Open for Lunch and Dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 12:00pm to 10:30pm and Sunday from 2:00pm to 10:00pm

Exuma Point

Outdoor dining on a colorful outdoor deck on the beach in Rolleville. They offer an All you can eat Buffet Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 pm until all guests have gone. They offer a wonderful menu of fresh home-cooked native dishes, fresh vegetables and fresh local fruits when in season. Also available for private events and catering.

Splash Bar at Palm Bay

Located at Palm Bay Beach Club, The Splash Bar is a great place to hang out and enjoy drinks friends and good food. There is both indoor and outdoor poolside seating that feature beautiful views of Elizabeth Harbour. Also, for those inclined, rack up and play some pool! Open for Breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30, Closed for Lunch then the Bar opens at 3:00pm and Dinner is 6:00pm to 9:30pm. Located just Northwest of Georgetown.

Towne Cafe

A great spot to dine in or carry out good native bahamian dishes for breakfast and lunch. Be sure to stop by in the morning for their great stew fish and Johnny Cake. They are open Monday through Saturday 7:30am to 3:00pm

Two Turtles

A very popular outdoor bar located in the center of Georgetown. They have a good Friday night BBQ and live music events. Open occasionally.

Housemans OutBack

A very popular local hangout with a great deck overlooking the ocean. Many consider it to have the best cracked conch on the island. Located on the Queens Highway in Mt. Thompson. Open 7 Days a week from 10:00am to 12:00 Midnight

Tropic Breeze

Located in Williamstown, 25 minutes form Georgetown . Hang out and enjoy drinks and friends while looking out over the ocean. TB is all outdoor dining with a Bahamian/Asian menu and cool drinks. TB features a trained chef/owner and very friendly staff. Open for Lunch and dinner. Call to confirm hours of operation as it varies. There is a beautiful beach on site to enjoy before or after dining.
